Richard Taunton 6th Form College, Southampton
Working alongside ECE Architecture and RLF, Civic Engineers designed a new learning space at this 6th form college in Southampton.
A former internal courtyard has been partially enclosed and reinvigorated to provide a new learning hub in the central of the college. Due to the single storey nature of the building it was possible to adopt exposed structure without the need for fire proofing. Larch wood columns and flitch beams with steel connection nodes were designed to create the new open plan internal space. The new building also incorporated existing covered space to the perimeter of the courtyard resulting in an interesting play with ceiling geometry, finishes and light.
The remaining courtyard space was reorganised with the removal of an old pond and new DDA complaint walkways and Astroturf introduced to create a clean and green environment.
