A big congratulations to some of our London-based Structures team who last week won the inaugural IstructE YMG design competition.

The competition, run in collaboration with Mott MacDonald, welcomed six teams to the IStructE headquarters where groups of between 4 and 6 people were given a design brief to complete. With a tight ninety-minute window to prepare and finalise their submissions, the team were then asked to present as a group to the judges.

An incredible collective of some of our Structures team members were very excited to be announced as the winners, after their entry focusing on how an existing car park could be adapted, impressed the judges. Noted for their creative use of sketching, focus on the reuse of the existing car park building, and commitment to minimal intervention, the team were recognised for their approach limiting additional work but still ensuring the space was servicing those using it, best.

A part of the team of six, Polly Natynczuk, a Structural Design Engineer in our London studio, said of the competition, “For many of the team it was our first time working together directly, so that was a really nice element of taking part. Working to such a tight deadline was challenging and we were conscious we had a lot of client requirements within the brief to address. We worked well together and were really aligned on the way we set-out to answer the brief. We knew we wanted to showcase our creativity with our love of sketching and also wanted to prioritise an approach that minimised intervention and really considered the existing car park structure. From sketching, presenting, and generally just collaborating, it was a fun evening that was made even better by our team win.”
