Bridge College, Openshaw

The Together Trust are a charitable organisation who provide care, education and support to children in the north of England and Wales with severe physical and learning disabilities. The Trust has relocated to Manchester to share a new campus with the Manchester College in Openshaw, East Manchester. The new campus comprises a new college building and outdoor sports facilities on the site of the former Rolls Royce Crossley works factories.

Build on a contaminated brownfield site, this project included remediation of the ground, re-use of former building materials, a new BREEAM ‘very good’ building, and a bridge link to the adjoining Manchester College site.

Civic Engineers provided the civil and structural engineering design for the new build development. The building is a steel frame clad in brickwork. The roof structure is a lightweight long span steel deck with an engineered plywood deck over. This is so as to allow a proprietary green roof to be installed. Lateral stability to the steel framing is provided by bracing in the roof structure and vertical bracing between columns to take lateral loads to foundation level. Driven piled foundations were utilised.

The design of the internal and external spaces were designed for students with physical and mental health challenges. Areas such as the hydrotherapy pool inside the building contribute to better lives in the community.

A pedestrian green bridge structure was also designed by Civic Engineers as part of this project, which spans over the public highway, Clayton Lane South. This bridge joins the Manchester College Openshaw campus together.
