AVRO, Brownsfield Milll

This large Grade II* listed mill building, distinguished by one of the last remaining chimney stacks in the city, is situated in the north eastern corner of Piccadilly Basin and by 2004 it had fallen into a dilapidated state of repair.

The fabric of the structure was in distress and exposed to the weather in a number of locations. The building owners decided to decant the tenants and undertake sufficient repairs to arrest any further decay and protect the historic features and character of the building. The scope involved complete refurbishment of the brick envelope, including chimney stack, stripping and refitting the entire roof and replacement of all windows. We were appointed alongside Stan Broster Design to prepare the reinstatement and construction information, dealing with conservation and heritage officers from the local authority.

Our involvement with the building has continued and we are now working with Urban Splash and Stephenson Studio to convert the building into canal-side apartments.
