Silbury Boulevard, Milton Keynes
This pre-development site contained two low rise office buildings set back from the generous streets synonymous with this New Town plan. The buildings were constructed as part of the original post war development and were dated.
The proposals included their demolition and replacement with a new 8-storey apartment block designed for PRS with a retail parade at street level.
The new building is U-Shaped on plan and tiered with numerous generous shared terraces, accommodating 152 apartments. The wings wrap around a central courtyard garden at podium level over a two storey car-park that is partly cut into the ground accommodating circa 114 car parking spaces on two levels, and commercial units at upper ground floor level fronting onto Silbury Boulevard.
The structure has been designed in reinforced concrete and highly regularised for efficiency. The party walls between apartments are designed to act as deep beams creating transfer structures which allow column free space in the retail units below.
