‘The Guts’ Housing, New Islington, Manchester
18 new family houses were designed for this site in the ‘guts’ of the New Islington Millennium Community along Cardroom Road, which became the third phase of Great Places’ social housing scheme in New Islington.
The houses are timber framed with brick cladding, containing balconies at first floor level. The buildings are founded on precast concrete driven piles and a new shared space street was constructed to the rear of the houses.
The houses were designed to Parker Morris space standards, a construction budget of £1,000/sq m and achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 and Lifetime Homes Standards.
Residents of New Islington were engaged in the design process and took occupation in April 2012.
The project has won a number of awards including Housing Design Awards 2011.
