Ironworks, Leeds
Civic Engineers are appointed as Structural Engineers by Igloo on this residential led, mixed-use development in Holbeck Urban Village, Leeds. The new-build development will consist of a six-storey apartment block consisting of 57 apartments, 15 three-storey townhouses and two retail units and sits within the listed Round Foundry complex where Matthew Murray made his name as one of the pioneering engineers of the 19th century.
The design for this new development references the historic structures that previously occupied the site – a mill and a forge. The apartments are situated in a ‘mill’ building, with ‘chimneys’ concealing lift shafts and ventilation. The lower-rise ‘forge’ building will contain townhouses. There will be private in-set balconies, roof-top terraces and hidden raised gardens for individual properties as well as areas of publicly accessible open space, including the highly praised and much loved ‘Wonderwood’ art park. All will sit around a private landscaped garden and courtyard, which will ingeniously hide the car parking beneath and ensure that there is active frontage on all sides.
The scheme incorporates an insitu concrete flat slab frame solution to the apartment building and central courtyard podium slab with a slender steel frame roof structure forming the vaulted ceilings to the rooftop penthouses with private terraces. The townhouses are formed in traditional construction using brick and blockwork load-bearing cavity walls and timber floors, supplemented with steelwork to form the feature oriel windows to the corner plots.
Construction is due for completion in 2021.
