Andrew Ruck

Director

Hi, I am an Engineer with an extremely broad range of experience gained over 20 years, driven by a strong desire to gain an expansive perspective on the role and contribution of the Structural Engineer. My experience covers most building types. The emphasis in my first ten years of professional practice whilst working at Alan Baxter & Associates lent towards existing buildings, developing an appreciation of their structural anatomy and strategies for their conservation, alteration, repair and reuse. This was interspersed with the structural design of a variety of new buildings, which helped me to develop an early interest in architecture, contemporary design and collaboration as part of a design team. Work over my second ten years as a Director at AKT II, built on these early foundations, with emphasis towards design-oriented projects with high profile Architects both in the UK and abroad. I was privileged to lead the structural engineering for Bloomberg’s 2018 RIBA Stirling Prize winning new European Headquarters in London as part of an amazing project team. I am a big believer in the power of a team and the need to promote good chemistry on projects to deliver better results. I also enjoy sharing knowledge and have been a visiting lecturer at several Architecture Schools as well acting as a mentor to many Engineers. Outside of the engineering world, I’m a keen cyclist, guitarist, School Governor and active travel advocate, whilst being a Dad to 2 teenagers who are growing up too fast for my liking.

I enjoy re-purposing leftovers from home DIY projects. Here’s our garden bench which I made from the off cuts of floor joists left-over from our loft extension. It’s not going anywhere, rock solid and you could build a house on top of it!
