Billy Brand

Chartered Structural Engineer

I graduated from Newcastle University in 2016 after completing an MEng (Hons) degree in Civil & Structural Engineering which I thoroughly enjoyed. Since then, I have accumulated over 5 years’ post-graduate experience working for structural engineering consultancies, most recently at Pell Frischmann where I spent 4 ½ years within their Building Structures team in London prior to joining Civic Engineers in January 2022.

I have experience working across a range of sectors, having had the opportunity to work on large scale residential led mixed-use developments, high-end offices, a research centre on the banks of the River Thames and numerous refurbishment projects including offices, shopping centres and exhibition centres.

I am keenly interested in historic buildings and their architecture, having worked on or adjacent to several listed buildings in the past. I enjoy the process of establishing and understanding the means by which these structures work and ensuring design decisions sympathise with the sensitive nature of these buildings. I am also passionate about sustainability and promoting how we as engineers can help achieve Net-Zero carbon targets through thoughtful design and championing a ‘RetroFirst’ approach.

Outside of work, I enjoy travelling and visiting new places both overseas and in the UK. I’ve recently taken up playing golf, which aside from being (mostly!) enjoyable to play allows me to travel to different destinations such as a recent trip to Vilamoura in Portugal. I am big sports fan and enjoy spending weekends watching Leeds United and Wakefield Trinity, and I’m looking forward to relocating back to my native Yorkshire to get to more live games.

I also enjoy DIY and making things and took the opportunity during COVID lockdown to create a desk and coffee table from old scaffold boards. So far they are both still standing…
