The Detailer podcast: Interview with Stephen O’Malley

Our CEO Stephen O’Malley was interviewed by David Taylor, editor at NLQ, for an episode of the Detailer podcast while walking down the Croisette in Cannes at this year’s MIPIM.

In the episode, Stephen shares what we mean by system thinking, and why it’s vital to apply both technical excellence and emotional intelligence to have a positive impact for people and place.

“Where you live, your health prospects, the climatic resilience of your home, all of these things are interdependent, it’s one single system. And the convergence of all these aspects is only accelerating.”

He explains why we’ve curated a team to respond to the climate and societal change, that includes built environment engineering, alongside transport, heritage, archaeology, sustainability and place-based consultancy.

Stephen moves on to reflect on our work on the Strangeways Strategic Regeneration Framework, and how the journey of the neighbourhood connects to stories of our other projects, including New Islington in Manchester and College Green in Dublin.

“It’s an absolute burning passion of mine’, he says, ‘to respect the climate, and deal with that in a much more positive way, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because I believe it adds a huge amount of value to the lives of the people that then get to interact with it and spend time with it.”

You can listen back on Apple, Spotify, Amazon and Acast, and find out more about our presence at MIPIM here.
