Three golden pineapples for Stretford Kingsway, Urban Mining & Greyfriars Green
We’re celebrating winning three golden pineapple awards for Stretford Kingsway, ‘Urban Mining’ and Greyfriars Green at The Pineapples 2025. We’re going to need a bigger fruit bowl!
The Pineapples are renowned for recognising excellence in every stage of the development, design and delivery of placemaking. They celebrate great places that thrive, where people want to live, work, play, shop or learn.
This year, we were proud to win the following recognition alongside brilliant collaborators:
- Winners for inspirational infrastructure – Stretford Kingsway
We worked closely with Trafford Council, Exterior Architecture Ltd, The LK Group, A E Yates Ltd., Simon Fenton Partnership and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios) on the major improvements to Kingsway and Barton Road, transforming it into a focal point for the community with sustainable urban drainage, creating a greener, healthier and more resilient space. You can read more about the project here.
The judges said: “The judges congratulate the boldness of this project to remove an underpass, which will have a strong impact beyond the immediate environment as a potential case study for others to follow. The street furniture had clearly come from discussions with the community around what they wanted alongside excellent planting that with a strong rationale. This project sends a clear message to be creative and take a different approach to enjoy fantastic outcomes.”
- Winners for pioneering climate resilience – ‘Urban Mining’ at The Elephant and TBC.London
An industry first where we collaborated with Webb Yates Engineers, FORE Partnership and more to reclaim 1930’s steelwork from The Elephant on Oxford Street for use at TBC.London, a step forwards for the circular economy. You can read more about the project here.
The judges said: “This myth-busting project not only proved that the reuse of historic steel structure is possible and cost effective, it also pointed to significant systems change through its open and transparent commitment to educate others about the reuse of steel, and the creation of the Engineers Reuse Collective to network and unearth future opportunities to increase significant material reuse. In addition, the cultural story of the steel was put on show including the foundry stamp, pointing to the longstanding cultural tradition of reusing materials with historical or personal meaning – to which we must return. This project felt like an invitation to the industry to be part of something bigger and is leading the way.”
- Winners for future place – Greyfriars Green, Northampton
This transformative project will breathe new life into Northampton, guided by a masterplan that prioritises creativity, nature, connectivity, play, and living. Greyfriars will deliver vibrant public spaces, enhanced green areas, new homes, and exciting destinations for leisure and commercial space. Well done everyone involved, including Studio Egret West, Deetu, Craig White, Etude, BWB Consulting Ltd, Start Advisory Limited.
The judges commented: “This project is about activating urban space in a characterful way so it has a soul and meaning linked to history of place, and a generosity that goes beyond the site boundary. The scheme has grown out of a history of the place, based on a deep understanding of the existing site. The context and mix of tenure is right with glorious landscape design. It includes good public space that is not reliant on ownership and maintenance by a single commercial linchpin. The project has integrity, it is rich and vibrant. The design has a good scale with permeability and relationship outside red line. The judges look forward to it happening!”
We’re very proud to have collaborated with such great teams on these projects and over the moon they have been recognised for their positive impact on people and place.
