Park Hill Takes Home Three Awards at AJ Retrofit Awards 2023

Congratulations to all the teams involved in Phase 2 of Park Hill, Europe’s largest listed building that won big at this week’s AJ Retrofit Awards.

Winning in the Housing category, Listed Building £5 million and over category, and the coveted Retrofit of the Year award, it was a night of much success for Architects, Mikhail Riches and for the wider project teams helping to bring the Sheffield housing scheme to life during Phase 2.

Each year, the AJ Retrofit Awards recognise and celebrate the design expertise behind the renewal and repurposing of existing buildings, and championing ways to reduce the built environment’s carbon footprint in the process. As focus across the UK continues to centre on upgrading housing, commercial and industrial buildings, retrofit continues to play a major role in the future of the country’s most exciting construction projects.

Appointed as Civil, Structural and Transport Engineers on this iconic development, Park Hill Phase 2 was a project that embodied many of our own values as a practice here at Civic Engineers. With the sense of community restored and the development continuing to win accolades and recognition, all of our team would like to extend a big congratulations to the project teams involved.

The experience we have developed as a Practice on the Park Hill estate across the three phases has resulted in a depth of knowledge which we have been able to test and build upon over the years. Knowledge share across the Phases, with Phase 2 and 3 works undertaken concurrently, contributed to the much greater levels of retention of the structural fabric leading to the impressive whole life carbon assessment.

Highlighting our own journey supporting the retrofit of Park Hill, our Co-Founding Director and Chief Operating Officer, Julian Broster said: “The regeneration of Park Hill estate has been an incredible journey for us at Civic Engineers, through our involvement in all three phases since the mid-2000s. Phase Two has had particular emphasis on retention, repair and renewal of the existing building fabric and the result is stunning, as well as technically impressive with its whole life carbon assessment of 360kgCO2/sqm. Congratulations to Mikhail Riches, Urban Splash and the rest of the design team, this is an incredibly satisfying award.”
