Lycee Francais Charles De Gaulle de Londres

Lycee Francais Charles De Gaulle de Londres is a popular inner city school in South Kensington for 2000 pupils that faces high pressure on its external breakout and play spaces.

Wayward Architects and Civic Engineers were appointed to rejuvenate the existing primary school playground, with a requirement for the work to be completed to a tight programme during the summer holidays.

The scheme involved re-surfacing the playground and building additional structures within the playground area. The playground surface is made up of multi-coloured tarmac with formed concrete play mounds dotted around with playground, the irregular nature of which posed several drainage issues. Civic Engineers also designed multiple structures including a large steel and timber rain shelter with multifaceted geometry that mimicked a paper aeroplane, new ramps, play equipment and hanging acoustic baffle along a covered walkway.
