Restoring ‘Mackie Mayor’ to its former glory

Alongside Buttress architects and Market Operations’ team, we have helped to convert recently restored Mackie Mayor, the Grade II listed former meat market on Swan St, Manchester. This much-loved building, now Manchester’s newest foodie destination, seating up to 550 people and holding up to 900, has undergone careful refurbishment and alteration using the expertise from Market Operations’ Ritchie Riding, and the Civic Engineers team who were responsible for structural engineering design.

With significant experience restoring and converting historic buildings, the team relished the challenged of bringing the building back to life. Key elements included design of the new main feature staircase, new structural alterations, and designing the system for suspending lighting from the high ceilings.

Founding Director of Civic Engineers, Julian Broster said, “Mackie Mayor has been a great project for us to work on for Market Operations, using different areas of our expertise. Keeping the natural look and feel of the building, exposing the original features were key elements. The new features such as the main staircase were a genuine collaboration between Client, Builder, Architect and ourselves.  It’s already proving to be a successful and much-loved destination in the Northern Quarter.”
