A sleek new rooftop bar for Fitzrovia

Atop the newly constructed Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’ Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Hanover square, sits a new rooftop bar designed by Civic Engineers — a sleek new watering hole for London’s bustling Fitzrovia with panoramic views of the city’s skyline.

Our team worked with Jaysam, the D&B contractor and client, and Method Architects, to develop work that complemented the existing rooftop design, featuring a steel frame with hollow core planks. Integral to the design philosophy was keeping new loads onto the structure down and maintaining existing load paths where possible. Loads were transferred at floor level to transfer directly to the steel frame to avoid point loads onto the precast concrete, while internal floors bore directly onto the existing concrete deck.

Andrew Ruck, director in our London studio, said: “This was a challenging programme that required both speed, sensitivity and a careful response to the elegance of the new Mandarin Oriental Mayfair hotel. We’re really proud of our contribution to this project and our October – March turnaround for the structure of a new rooftop pavilion on such a significant new building on Hanover Square.”
