Ashton Market Designs Submitted for Planning

Plans to transform one of the region’s oldest and largest markets have been submitted for planning approval.

As part of the proposed new designs, the much-loved Ashton Market, which welcomes over 50,000 visitors every week and is home to over 70 independent traders, will welcome a new canopy  undercover area, new gardens and play areas.

Already an iconic space that has long fascinated visitors and regular users, the plans for the  market in  Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, Greater Manchester, will elevate the market by further building on Ashton Town Centre’s opportunity to become a thriving modern new market town that continues to enrich public life.

With the designs also including improvements to walking routes and fostering a more inclusive and welcoming space for users, the new large canopy structure will see current fixed stalls and kiosks replaced with flexible units. The new flexible, durable market stalls will  frame views of the listed Town Hall and Market Hall buildings and improve walking routes through to the square in all directions.

Discussing the plans and our appointment on the design team as Civil, Structural and Transport Engineers, Paul Morris, Director at Civic Engineers, said: “The Market Square and new canopy structure will be transformational for Ashton.

“As well as creating a fantastic new focal point for the town, the introduction of nature-based SuDS solutions including raingardens and tree pits will provide climate resilience, managing surface water and protecting against flooding whilst increasing biodiversity within the landscape.

“We’re delighted to be part of the design team, led by Lead Designer, Planit-IE, and hope to bring these important regeneration works to life.”

With engagement with local residents, market traders and stakeholders taking place for more than a year through a number of workshops and events, Lindsay Humblet, Director at Planit-IE, the urban design and landscape architecture practice, said: “The way the new elevations have been designed, frame both the clock tower of the Market Hall and also Town Hall’s beautiful facade. This was a crucial requirement, we want the people arriving at the square to see these incredible views and some of Ashton’s greatest assets.

“I’ve been working with Tameside’s team for a number of years, it is a beautiful town and we believe the proposals for the Market Quarter will become a catalyst for further regeneration.”

We’re proud to be part of the talented design team working to create the new vision for Ashton Market,  alongside Lead Designer, Planit-IE, includes Buttress Architects, Hoare Lea, Simon Fenton Partnership, LK Group, Market Curators, Broadbent Studios and Safer Sphere.

With proposals now submitted to Tameside Council, we hope to be able to be a part of the team helping another of our historic market towns continue to thrive.
