Cannon Green is a new workplace concept in the heart of the square mile offering approximately 82,000 sq ft of modern office space along with The Listing, a new concept Drake & Morgan bar & restaurant, business lounge, Gymbox gym, as well as a bike club and ‘Spanner’ bike repair shop, all under the same roof.

Civic Engineers acted as the Structural Engineers on the project for our client Ocubis. Working alongside John Robertson Architects we designed a new double storey, full height, structurally glazed, exposed steel framed podium building to function as the reception to two refurbished 1960s office towers and to accommodate a new bar/restaurant.   A fine finished insitu concrete stair with inverted amphitheatre provides a unique transitional space between the reception and The City Pavilion shared office space above.

Further works being completed include increasing the height of the existing tower buildings in the form of two storey extensions with roof terraces and significant alterations to three storeys of basement to accommodate a new gym, bike club, server rooms and plant space.

From the outset it was very important to understand the original building designer’s engineering and construction, through thorough research and site investigation to gain a solid understanding of the anatomy of the existing structure. Once this was established, we had the opportunity to utilise a full suite of engineering design skills to adapt, restore and improve the building to meet the Client’s design aspirations and to provide unique and vibrant office space. The design process was extremely creative, and the opportunity to deliver some wonderfully detailed exposed steel and concrete structures that is central to the form of this building, was the icing on the cake.”

We were delighted to work with Civic Engineers throughout the life of this project, from the initial concept and planning stage through to Practical Completion, and we welcomed their no-nonsense and detailed approach to engineering and their quick response team of engineers through a director-led service. Civic fully understood our project brief from the outset and worked very creatively to form the structural gymnastics, in order to push the existing building’s envelope to ensure we delivered the maximum amount of lettable commercial space and uses throughout the building, without compromising our high expectation of design.”
