Engineering ‘Engels’ for MIF17

The Manchester International Festival closed at the weekend with the unveiling of a statue of Friedrich Engels in Tony Wilson Place.

Turner Prize nominated artist, Phil Collins, creator of ‘Ceremony’ closed the Festival and returned Engels to Manchester, the city where he made his name. The event mixed footage from the statue’s incredible journey from Ukraine across Europe with live coverage from the inauguration.

We have been proud to assist the Festival and Phil’s team over the last few months with the planning process and the structural engineering challenges the statue presented. These challenges included the overall stability of this Soviet era monument, along with its interface with the new supporting structure.

Engels now stands proud in Manchester and we are delighted to have played our role in helping bring him here.
