Sentinels, Cutting Room Square, Manchester
The Cutting Room Square ‘Sentinels’ are a series of five, 6m high precast concrete monoliths each framing an extraordinary Ancoats image and the group forms the backdrop to a new public square.
The high definition photographic images set within the frames were taken by resident artist Dan Dubowitz, each depicting scenes from the cutting rooms within the derelict textile mills just prior to their demolition. The design process was a close collaboration with Dan to achieve the right scale of structure, a practical means of installation and retention of the glass images and the patinated copper colouring of the concrete. The frames are positioned into sockets in the piled foundations to ease the construction process.
