Chocolate Works, York

We carried out Civil and Structural Engineering services for David Wilson Homes on a prestigious housing development on the former Terry’s Chocolate Factory site, adjacent to York Racecourse. The development comprises bespoke 2-3 storey town houses and 3-5 storey apartment blocks. The masterplan, with a formal urban square at the centre of the development, maximises the total number of 320 houses and apartments.

Initially we co-ordinated the full site investigation, flood risk assessment and site reclamation works, which developed a foundation strategy for the site by identifying areas of poor ground and historic structures.

We have carried out structural designs for loadbearing masonry, timber and steelwork for the houses, along with both steel and concrete frame designs for the apartment blocks. We have also been responsible for technical submissions for s38 and s278 Highways agreements, and submission of s104 Drainage agreements for both Phases of the Project. Construction began in 2013 and Phase 1, including site wide infrastructure, was complete in Spring 2018, phase 2 is due for completion in 2020.
