Stirling Prize award shortlisting for Park Hill and Chowdhury Walk
Two of our projects, Park Hill Phase 2 and Chowdhury Walk, have been shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize.
Park Hill Phase 2 is part of the ongoing regeneration of Europe’s largest listed structure into a vibrant and sustainable community, with a mix of residential and commercial buildings.
We have been civil, structural and transport engineers on the project, which has set a precedent for how the UK should retrofit existing building stock to deliver housing.
The scheme has regenerated the central section of the estate, creating 195 flats and 2,000m² of commercial space, while preserving the original structure and prioritising energy efficiency. Read more about our work to retain and pay homage to the original construction here.
It’s the latest recognition after a series of awards celebrating its expertise in renewal, with the project winning AJ Retrofit, Dezeen and Housing Design accolades. Park Hill Phase 1 by Hawkins\Brown and Studio Egret West for Urban Splash earned a Stirling Prize nomination in 2013.
Chowdhury Walk heralds an ambitious programme of new generation council homes by Hackney Council. We provided transport and drainage engineering on the project, which is an infill development of 11 houses that stands between two existing terraces and their gardens, on a plot previously occupied by garages and ad hoc car parking.
RIBA president Muyiwa Oki commented: “Each scheme thoughtfully adapts elements of our existing built environment.
“At a time when the need to preserve our planet’s resources is greater than ever, these projects are to be commended for placing regeneration and restoration front and centre.”
Congratulations to architect Mikhail Riches, Urban Splash, Places for People (Park Hill) and Al-Jawad Pike and London Borough of Hackney (Chowdhury Walk) and all the project teams involved, we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for the announcement in October.
