We’re looking forward to taking Women in Property on a netwalking tour of our project, Northfield Grove in Edinburgh on 15^th November, and you can join too.

We were civil engineers on the project to transform Northfield Grove, a social-housing estate, into a climate-adapted neighbourhood.

The regeneration has been shortlisted for multiple industry awards in recognition of the positive impact it has had on the community, including The Pineapples, Property Week ESG Edge and Unlock Net Zero, so it’s great to be able to share its story.

The tour will take place as part of Women in Property’s fringe programme for its People, Places and Innovation Summit, which we’re proud to sponsor.

Led by Nikki Johnston, principal engineer and Elizabeth Aspinall, civil design engineer here at Civic Engineers, alongside Raeburn Farquhar Bowen, the tour will take in:

• The innovative design that has transformed the area into a climate-resilient neighbourhood
• Green features like the “green Spine Raingarden,” and how they promote environmental sustainability and enhance residents’ quality of life
• Learnings on raingardens and swales, and how they sustainably manage surface water runoff and capture and treat water, reducing the burden on the existing drainage system and mitigating flood risks
• Enhanced biodiversity and local environment improvements

Nikki commented: “I’ve witnessed firsthand the positive impact that engineering can have on communities with the regeneration of my own childhood area, Northfield Grove.

“The area has been transformed from a drab neighbourhood into one centred around the community, with a meandering pathway, play parks, raingardens and offshoots to communal places. I took my four-year-old daughter for a walk there and it was amazing to see her exploring and so interested in the different flowers and bumble bees. Northfield has always had a strong community, but seeing the way that the new spaces are bringing people together adds a layer of warmth that I don’t believe was there before. Now there are children playing and elderly people sharing a coffee and a conversation. Everything feels integrated.”
