Completion of 62-62 Pall Mall, London

Civic Engineers have acted as Structural Engineers on this recently completed £10.5m office building project. In collaboration with Alan Short Architect and MJP Architects, we have designed a new office building for Berry Bros and Rudd wine merchants behind a partly retained facade opposite St James’ Palace on Pall Mall.

The development includes the refurbishment of the basement and rear courtyard to the neighbouring grade 1 listed Berry Bros building designed by Norman Shaw, and new connections through to it. The new building adds a second basement level formed by secant piled walls, and extends nine storeys high. The rear façade is unjointed load-bearing masonry with a complex geometric form and supported on raking steel columns below the roofline of the surrounding buildings.  It is one of the most demanding structural engineering projects that we have tackled. The façade retention and de-construction of existing building structure behind has been worked up in close collaboration with Galliford Try Construction, and includes cross-propping between the adjacent buildings during construction.

The Building has recently featured as the cover story on the July edition of Architecture Today which can be found online here.
