Project Update – Chapel Square, Altrincham

It was announced yesterday that funding has been secured for Chapel Square in Altrincham, a £15m mixed use development on Regent Road which is part of the continued transformation of Altrincham town centre. Currently a car park, the Citybranch development will see 70 residential apartments across two, five storey blocks being built, as well as 9500 sq foot of retail, restaurant and business space. There will also be a multi storey car park for up to 300 cars and new public realm which will link Chapel Square to the existing town centre public realm.

Designed by Project 3 Architects and working alongside GVA as Project Managers and Planit-ie as Landscape Architects,  we are civil, structural and transport engineers for the project which is expected to start on site in summer 2019. The development presents some challenging engineering aspects, including having to work on a busy and tight site which is close to a number of existing buildings, challenging ground conditions and a cantilevered corner to the car park steel frame.

The development has been named Chapel Square in recognition of the fact it was the site of Chapel Street which was known as the ‘bravest little street in England’ after 161 men from just 60 homes on the street served in the First World War, with 29 of them tragically killed.
